[Travel Log] Day 1 - Bijin in Taiwan

Day 1: Bijin travels to Taiwan
4 October 2023, Wednesday

Waited 6 whole months (since we purchased the air tickets) for this trip to happen, + the anxiety we felt - wondering if the friendship (that birthed through MaplestoryM) was going to make it out alive from spending 24/7 together over 11 days - after all, it is not uncommon for friends to turn foes after going on a trip together right? πŸ˜‚

Started the day at 6 a.m. at Changi Airport Terminal 3, with half-filled baggage and excitement.

The entire flight was pretty smooth-sailing and even arrived ahead of schedule - which was fantastic for us because we did consider the possibility of shifting the THSR timing to an earlier slot than originally planned. [I used the inflight WiFi for the first ever time and its great, you can keep in contact with family & friends while on flight now which is mind-blowing for me (note: requires KrisFlyer membership no. to be included in the flight booking to have complimentary usage)]

First things on the checklist to get done for the day was 1. collect SIM cards (which we purchased from Klook) and 2. to try our luck on the Taiwan Lucky Draw!

Quick note on collecting SIM cards: there are two booths side-by-side that seem to do the exact same things, you might want to do a quick check before queueing to see if you're at the correct one because when we tried to collect our SIM cards at the below booth (where the queue was), they directed us to the other booth (which had no queue), so we were pretty confused because both booths had some Klook advertisement in their spaces and no clear differentiation between them.

Sadly, neither of us had any luck with these.

After getting our connectivity up and running, we proceeded to take the MRT to Taoyuan HSR station. (P.s. Were they always this convenient all along - I don't remember it being this seamless to get to the respective transfer stations but heck yeah!)

Managed to switch our original HSR tickets at the collection counter (again, bought through Klook) to an earlier timeslot! By then we were also a little hungry, so we decided to do a quick convenience store meal while we waited for our HSR train to Taichung.

After arriving in Taichung, we had to find the shuttle service that would bring us to Sun Moon Lake, but we kind of got a little lost with the directions - and found Mister Donut. They were having a promotion of 6 donuts for 200TWD which is like 8.50SGD so why not?! (If you know, the queues in SG for Mister Donut is just crazy at the moment, but there's no queue here so YAY)

We checked back our itinerary plan and rerouted ourselves back to Exit 5 to get to the shuttle service and bought the bus tickets from the Sun Moon Lake/Nantou counter staff (only to realise later that we could have just used our iPass / EasyCard (our EzLink equivalent) in Taiwan to pay for the ride instead πŸ˜‚)

While on the bus, we were getting uncertain about how we would get from the terminal stop (Shuishe Pier) to our accommodation which was at the opposite end of Sun Moon Lake (Itathao Pier) because shuttle and ferry services between the two have already ended for the day.

Funny story: at some point in the bus ride, we saw that there was a bus stop named Crystal Resort & we thought we struck a pot of gold, only to be told by our instincts & GPS that it couldn't be right.

True enough, we reached Shuishe pier (the terminal stop) around 6 p.m. in front of a Police Station... STRANDED πŸ˜‚. Bi had downloaded Uber in anticipation for such a situation and we were prepared to call for a taxi. In fact, we saw one stationary taxi opposite us, but because we were waiting for a response from Uber and hesitant to approach, we saw him drive off eventually with other travellers.

So, two ladies with their suitcases standing in front of the Police Station opposite the 7-Eleven πŸ˜‚. We decided to reach out to the hotel to call for assistance. After a while, the hotel managed to find a driver for us (at 600TWD one-way flat rate) and we got to our final destination - The Crystal Inn where we would be staying at for 3 nights.

According to the hotel staff that helped us with our check-in, we should take a short break and come back out to settle dinner as soon as possible as the stores would all be closing around 8 p.m., so we did.

H.K. Style Dim Sum (ζ—₯ζœˆζ½ε°ζΉΎη¬¬δΈ€εε€θ‚‰ι₯)

We decided that we wanted something warm after such a long day of travelling (literally from Singapore - Taoyuan - Taichung - Sun Moon Lake) so we settled for this store.

No, we did not look at the google reviews prior to this, but I suppose that was also a good thing - because their vegetarian lu wei (區味) was actually memorable for me. I don't know if I was just too hungry, or too tired, but it was really good in that very moment. The tofu, tofu skins, whatever they used were all very fresh and what was even more amazing was actually their sauces that we could take to go with it.

The rest of the Dim Sum were so-so to me, but the braised pork rice was pretty nice (though portion was on the smaller side).

Is it time now to rave about the hotel room?!

We got a Quad room so naturally the room was pretty spacious for two (we were comparing prices and for the price range, this made a lot more sense than many others). To be very honest, I don't think we were expecting much from this hotel (because of the reviews) and maybe even a tad worried about the toilet layout/design, but oh my, look at that tatami corner over there.

This was nothing like the pictures I saw when I did the booking?

Yes, no doubt, there are some privacy issues (like curtains that don't block entirely because its against a one piece mirror that spans across the whole vanity/basin area), but if you're travelling with people mature enough to know when to look away - then this is perfect (for the price & space).

There's more to rave about this hotel - in the next post.

[Travel Log] JPN 2023 - Day 6&7: Ikeda & Homebound

 Day 6 & 7: Ikeda & Homebound

27-28 February 2023, Monday-Tuesday

Hotel Monterey Le Frere was in a pretty convenient location, not only was it near Osaka-Umeda station, it also had a Sugi Drugstore (with tax-free option for foreign travellers) and a Lawsons just at the first floor.

On the day of our check-out, I wanted to visit the Cup Noodles Museum before leaving Osaka City, so we decided to do a quick breakfast (a.k.a. Konbini brekkie) as we had to check out before 11 a.m.

We were such lazy bums, we legit checked out at 11 a.m. HAH. Then we headed to Ikeda station via the Hankyu Line.

It was such a nice day to be out, the sun was out while being breezy.

Explanation within the museum that I need time to understand... πŸ˜‚

And the mandatory activity of the day, designing our own cupnoodles!!  So first, we purchase an empty cup from the vending machines for 500 Yen. The staff will put a lid over the cup (so it does not get contaminated) and direct you to a table to draw.

Ta-dah. This was my cup with a failed drawing of Hiyoko-chan (the sister helped to make it look a bit more decent).

After we were done drawing, we could join the queue to choose the base flavour and 4 toppings that we wanted in our cup. For me, I chose curry flavour & a mixture of Hiyoko-chan fishcakes, Garlic, French Bean and Tamago as the toppings.

Went to the 2nd floor and saw the Chicken Ramen Factory where you can make it from scratch. Unfortunately, this is by appointment only. Shall put this in my to-do list for next time.

After the cup noodle experience, we were deciding between going back to Umeda station or to stick around the area when we passed by this signage at a tourist center (that was also operating as an eatery). How could I pass this? I saw the Ice-cream cone with Chicken Ramen topping... hahaha

An inspirational piece from the cupnoodles museum... (all the souvenirs we got at the shop for the kiddos)

After lunch, while walking back to the station, we spotted my sister's favourite store, and proceeded to get our lives coloured. (we nicknamed Seria as a 'Colour our lives' store πŸ˜‚)

I think we spent almost an hour at this Seria store before heading back to Hotel Monterey to get our luggage to move back to Rinku-Town in preparation for our morning flight the next day.

The hotel was a distance from the train station (about 8~10 minutes walk). Loved the interior, but probably had the most flaws among all the hotels that we stayed at (during this trip). Sound-proofing wasn't as good, we could hear the cars on the streets. No retention of heat in the room too.

I didn't really mind it, since it was only for a night.

There was really nothing much at Rinku-Town, the road to the hotel was dark and quiet, so we didn't venture too far. Again, there was a Lawson's at the ground floor of the hotel, so we decided have yet another Lawson's meal.

A glass cup that came bundled with a jelly cup.

Packed all the loots into the zipper compartment of the luggage... just look at all the stuff for the kiddos.

Then, it was the day to fly back home... you could see the bridge connecting to the airport from the view of the room.

And, that is the end of this travel log. We landed in rainy Singapore and was stuck at the immigration for awhile because we had to submit a declaration form and the sister took quite a while to get it done. So I found this corner near immigration that had this little decoration. hahaha.

That is it, for now. πŸ’•

[Travel Log] JPN 2023 - Day 1: SG to Osaka

Day 1: Hello KIX Airport & Rinku-Town
22 February 2023, Wednesday

After almost three whole years of non-travel, I finally got to visit Japan again! Both flights (to & from Osaka) were day flights as there weren't many options 😩

So here's how we spent our 7D6N (or rather, 5 full days) in Osaka-Kyoto!

As we arrived rather late at night, I decided to book a hotel nearby, in Rinku-Town, which was just a station away from the Airport.

Got greeted by Okada-san on an Aikido demonstration/explanation kind-of TV program.

And our Konbini dinner... that we got from the Airport before heading to our hotel since most places would have been closed for the day.

Travel Log - Japan 2018 Day 10-11

12 November 2018 (Tokyo)

My last full day in Tokyo, off to the happiest place on Earth... πŸ’–

The epicness of this. We were literally nearing the end of the queue when they announced that they were closing the ride (temporarily) for some maintenance work. Thankfully, we were given a pass that would give us priority when the ride comes back up. πŸ˜…

There is an on-the-spot lucky draw area where you could ballot for show tickets and instantly know if you got it or not. I didn't have luck for my entry but Jole did. πŸ™Œ

On the day we went, there was a couple holding their wedding at DisneySEA... so cute, being sailed on the boat in their wedding tux and dress while the crowds cheered on for them.

Dinner @ Ichiran Ramen
Map: Japan, 〒111-0032 Tokyo, Taito City, Asakusa, 1 Chome−1−οΌ‘οΌ– HK桅草ビル B1F

In our initial planning stages for the trip, I was told that Ichiran Ramen has these solo dining booths where diners don't have to interact with service staff and the ramen gets served through the separators between the chef and the diner.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to experience that. The Ichiran Ramen we went to had proper dining tables and chairs, and they even sold the packet ramen at a corner!

13 November 2018 (Homebound)

& It was time for me to go home. Jole sent me off to the lift of the subway station (before she continued on her solo journey in Tokyo for an additional 3-4 days) and I was trying really hard not to tear because that would be so embarrassing. πŸ˜‚ (I dont even know why I do that because I'm going to see them in SG anyway, LOL)

Asakusa Station is really convenient, especially if you're flying out of Narita Airport. As long as you get the station right and the lift exit correct, the journey to the airport is pretty much a breeze (with the luggage).

It was a bad decision to eat Phad Thai when I'm in Japan. Why did I even do that.

And this wraps up my trip to Japan after a 5-years break. Really enjoyed the scenery throughout this trip, along with my friends, I have had a lot of 1st time experiences (such as taking the highway buses, experiencing the public bath/onsen, solo-travelling in Tokyo, etc).

It's quite crazy because its been about 5 months since all of these happened (writing this last few posts on the day that I need to be at the airport for my Nagoya Trip, LOL) and till date I still look at all these photos I took and marvel at the sights of Central Japan.

Definitely places that I would want to revisit or bring my family.
