Just a couple of weeks ago, I was introduced to 刘大妈烧烤吧 (Liu Da Ma Charcoal BBQ) which is located at Geylang Lor 11.
I swear, that ignited all my memories from Sanya, Hainan. My 5 months in Sanya, taught me about that legendary 炒粉 (I still have days that I crave for it so much, but sadly, unable to satisfy - p.s. I dont rly want to go back there, hence..) & 串烧.
Since that other day, I've been craving for it. 刘大妈烧烤吧 is, in my opinion, better for groups. If you want 80 cents lamb skewers, then that is the place to go. For me, though, I found the place to be a little ulu (?) and I'm not that comfortable heading there (a.k.a the stigma of Geylang) on my own for skewers. SO...
This is my take on another 串烧 place called BBQ BOX, located at Bugis (the steamboat/bbq street opposite Bugis Junction)! [They have other outlets around as well... in Chinatown & Geylang (?)]
Skewers are all cooked before being brought to the table and the box served as a warmer to the skewers (there's a lighted candle in the box). One thing though, not all skewers came out hot (I mean, you would expect them to be piping hot for a bbq place, right?).
Just look at the seasoned potato slices... 😇
For some, the seasoning might be on the salty side but... its completely acceptable. It's just like how some would always eat maggi noodles and drink the soup knowing that its high in msg and stuff like that. Its a guilty pleasure (for me, at least).
[Since every skewer is seasoned with the same type of seasoning, this is also a place where you either like the taste... or you don't. I don't think there's an in-between 😂😅]
I'm such a potato person, so it pleases me to know that each serving of potato slices comes in 3 skewers (so that is like 9 slices per serving). Tofu slices were great, they too, come in 3 skewers per serving.
The toast bread was a recommendation from a blog that I read before heading there, its definitely savory, but it wasn't like a must-order for me. Perhaps, I'm just not that much of a bread person.
Chicken wings were GREAT. I ordered a skewer of the cajun-flavoured ones, they were so easy to eat with chopsticks.
The one thing I didn't like at BBQ Box is their Sour Plum Drink. I'll go for herbal tea next time. 😎
p.s. drink loads of water, it gets quite thirsty after, but so worth it if you appreciate the seasoning.
